Welcoming Fall at Sunnyside Up

There’s a shift happening at Sunnyside Up Farm.

The mornings are cooler. The light is changing. The garden is beginning to slow down, and suddenly there are little signs of fall everywhere we look. With the Fall Equinox just behind us, we’ve officially turned the corner into a new season.

Around the farm, this time of year always feels a little magical.

The equinox marks a moment of balance, when day and night are nearly equal, before we begin our gradual journey into shorter days and longer nights. It feels like nature’s invitation to slow down, gather in, and notice what we’ve spent the warmer months growing.

Fall is a season of harvest, gratitude, and transition. After the busyness of summer, there’s something comforting about pulling on a sweater, opening the windows to that crisp Central Oregon air, and making home feel warm again.

One of our favorite ways to welcome the season is with a simmer pot.

Our fall simmer pots are filled with ingredients like orange, lemon, apple, cinnamon, cloves, and bay leaves. Add everything to a pot of water, let it gently simmer on the stove, and before long the whole house smells like fall.

But we love the idea of making it more than just a wonderful scent.

Make it a fall ritual.

As you add each ingredient to the pot, take a moment to think about what you want to carry with you into this new season, and what you’re ready to leave behind. Let the warmth, fragrance, and simple act of tending the pot become a reminder to slow down and be present.

And now that October has arrived, there’s a little extra magic in the air.

Halloween is coming. Pumpkins are appearing on porches, evenings are getting darker, leaves are crunching underfoot, and we fully support embracing the slightly mysterious, wonderfully witchy side of the season.

Light a candle. Make something warm for dinner. Put a simmer pot on the stove. Decorate the porch. Invite friends over. Watch the sunset. Take the long way through the garden.

There doesn’t have to be anything elaborate about welcoming a new season.

Sometimes a ritual is simply doing an ordinary thing with a little more intention.

Here’s to crisp mornings, cozy kitchens, changing leaves, pumpkins, a touch of Halloween magic, and everything this new season brings.

Happy Fall from all of us at Sunnyside Up Farm.

Turn off the noise. Get back to basics.
