Welcome to September

The seasons are beginning to change here in Central Oregon giving us the first hints of fall. The leaves are starting to turn, the mornings are becoming cold and crisp, and we’re reaching for a jacket before heading outside to start the day. With the fall equinox approaching, Sunnyside Up is beginning its own transition into another beautiful season on the farm.

Even the chickens know something is changing. As the days grow shorter, we’re seeing changes in egg production and learning more all the time about our flock, their natural rhythms and what they need as the seasons change.

We’ve been doing plenty of chicken homework around here, and let’s just say we have some exciting changes coming. We’ll share more about those soon.

We’re also busy preparing the farm for cooler weather, but one thing that won’t be changing is access to the Farmstand. Thanks to our solar-powered heating and cooling system, we can keep the stand comfortable and our products protected as Central Oregon temperatures begin to drop.

What you’ll find inside will naturally change with the seasons, and fall is bringing plenty of goodness with it.

Abbey Benson of Messy Marvin’s is helping lead us deliciously into the season with her newest creation, the puffed tart. Think of that familiar toaster pastry many of us grew up with, only homemade and so much better. She’s also bringing oatmeal cream pies, her own cookies, sourdough bread and just about anything else you might suddenly decide you need once you see it sitting on the shelf.

We’re especially grateful to have Abbey helping keep the Farmstand full while our own Sidney Nordlund takes some well-deserved time away as she and her husband, Kyle, prepare to welcome baby number two. Big sister Rina will soon be welcoming her little sister, Holly, and there is a beautiful story behind her name. Holly is being named in honor of Anthony “Tony” Holloway, a beloved member of the Carlson Testing family who has passed on. It’s a meaningful way for Sidney and Kyle to carry the memory of someone special forward into the next generation. We couldn’t be happier for Sidney, Kyle and Rina as they prepare to welcome Holly and begin this beautiful new chapter as a family of four.

As we move toward the fall equinox, there is something special about watching the farm change right along with the season. The leaves change color, the mornings get colder, the chickens adjust to shorter days and the shelves begin filling with the flavors and comforts of fall.

So grab that morning jacket, enjoy those first changing leaves and keep stopping by.

The season may be changing, but there will still be plenty of goodness waiting for you at Sunnyside Up.
